Conservative Care

There are many conditions that can affect the health of feet and ankles. However, not all lower limb problems require surgery. In fact, many of them don’t!

Even conditions that are caused by structural deformities, like flat feet and bunions, can often benefit from conservative treatment options such as custom orthotics. And if non-invasive treatment is enough to manage your symptoms (or altogether eradicate the underlying problem), then conservative methods will always be recommended first.

Our ultimate goal is to allow you to go back to living an active lifestyle – without foot or ankle pain.

Now, certainly, if these non-surgical approaches are unable to get you the relief you need, or Dr. Anthony Spitz determines that your condition is too severe to respond to these measures, we can then start considering surgery. If that becomes the case for you, you can find comfort in knowing that we are well equipped and trained to provide the best surgical outcome possible.

But the good news is most foot and ankle problems rarely need surgery to be corrected. We have been able to restore full mobility and health to most of our patients using one or more of the conservative treatments below:

Custom Orthotics for Foot Abnormalities

Custom orthotics are lightweight, flexible devices that can be used to help correct an irregular or abnormal walking pattern caused by the inability of the foot to bear weight properly. These abnormalities can lead to bone, tendon and soft tissue problems, as well as conditions like bunions and hammertoes.

Custom fit orthotics come in many shapes, sizes and materials but fall into three main categories:Rigid orthoticsSemi rigid orthoticsSoft orthotics

Once Dr. Anthony Spitz has performed a thorough evaluation of your feet and ankles, he will then be able to determine which type of device is best for you.

Laser Treatment for Fungal Nails

Through the use of very specific forms of light energy, laser therapy works to kill the fungus at its very source. This treatment method is often used in conjunction with topical medications, which are usually less effective when used as a standalone treatment. By combining these approaches (laser therapy and topical medications), your chances of successfully eradicating the fungus increases by almost 80 percent!

What’s more:

  • Treatment sessions are quick, lasting about 15 minutes.
  • There is no need for a recovery period.
  • There are no known side effects or pain associated with laser treatment.
  • Results are much quicker.

You should keep in mind, however, that you will still need to take measures in order to prevent the chances of becoming infected again.
